I think that at the end of the book Gabe and Jonas die. I think this because maybe when they made it to the top Jonas fainted. Then Since Jonas fainted Gabe died too because he was being held by Jonas and was very weak. I think this because first of all why would there be a sled at the top? Just MAGICALLY a sled is there? I think that when he reached the top he fainted and then all of his memories flashed before his eyes. This is believable because one of Jonas' most memorable memories was sledding down a hill. Then he was just lying there while music played in a far off distance. My second theory that happened was that they really did find a sled at the end and slid down a hill. But since they were going to fast they didn't realize they hit a bump and fell in to the snow. Then he started to lose consciousness. But people who were caroling managed to pass by and save them. Then Gabe and Jonas wake up consciousness in a new book and they live in a new community that is like the real world. Where they have to adapt to making changes in their life. These are 2 theories that i have.

What I think is that Jonas was just having the memory of Christmas when he was hearing the music. When they were going to down the hill, Jonas was having the first memory he had of the sled and going down the mountain. What I think happened is, Jonas was passed out on the snow because he was exhausted and Gabriel died because he was freezing. I also think Jonas died because he was too tired to move so he died with Gabe in the snow. The evidence I have is, the giver gave Jonas the memory of the sled and snow so Jonas might have been remembering that memory. Also, the book also mentioned that Jonas and Gabriel were cold and tired so Jonas and Gabe froze to death. My other opinion is, they both survived. I think that because the singing probably was a Christmas party in another community. Jonas was having the memory of the sled but was actually sliding down the hill on his bottom. The proof that I have is, that it mentioned that they were sliding down a hill, but where would find a sled in the middle of nowhere so they probably sliding on their backs. Those are my thoughts on what happened to Gabriel and Jonas.

What I think happened at the end of the story is that Jonas and Gabe had passed out and Jonas was just having the memory again and had thought that it was real. But I also think that it was real because he was saying that he saw the red sled, he held Gabe up against him and rode down the hill. As they were going down Jonas saw lights on a tree inside a house. He knew that he had reached a destination and that it would be safe to live there with a family. Were they said “Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and they were waiting too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing. Behind him, across vast distance of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.” It got me thinking that either Jonas heard children singing carols, or that people were just singing Christmas songs. I could tell it was Christmas because of the lights on the tree and when Jonas heard music. I think that both just passed away Jonas transferred the memory over to Gabe and they both were in the memory.

I think that Jonas and Gabe make it to the house and got taken care of by another family. At the house they ended up getting fed and cleaned up by the adults. They got warm and were very happy. And they felt Santa would bring them presents and they would be a family there. I think that, because at the end of the book it said that Jonas and Gabe saw the lights of the house and they were headed towards it. I also think that the music they kept hearing was of the people of the village they were going to and that those could have been the people that saved them and the music meant it was a happy place. Or another idea I have is that they didn't make it to the house and they died because of being so cold and hungry. Another idea I have is that they almost made it to the house and Jonas couldn't create another cold memory because he was so tired and hungry that the planes found them and released them.

I think that Gabe and Jonas are 1. Dead, 2. This was all Jonas's dream, 3. They made it to else where. My first guess was they died because Jonas had started to recall his memories, as some people say you do when you die. And also, how did the sled appear from thin air? My guess is that the sled was just an illusion, as was the Christmas display. The second prediction that I had was that all this that happened, was all a dream. That Jonas was never the Receiver, that Gabe didn't exist, that everyone had feelings and could see colours. In that theory, Jonas was the one who thought of the community idea, and he told everyone he knew about it. Then shortly after, Jonas gets the dream that was the whole storyline of the giver, about how the world would be with the community. That would explain the sled appearing out of no where and Jonas being able to name stuff that didn't exist. My final theory is that they made it to else where. I thought of this because the giver and Jonas where so sure of else where existing, and since the giver knows everything, I'm pretty sure he knew what he was talking about. Their was even a sentence that proves me right. It said, " The giver and I were sure else where existed". It was when Jonas was telling us the plan. That is what I think happened at the end of the book.

i think that when he found the sled that was one of the memories that he had so when the sled ride was over he had found the other memory of warmth so when they got off he saw the homes full of all the families with the warmth and since it was a memory he said that the families were waiting for him so he went he said than he heard all the people singing and all the music but maybe it was a echo maybe he meant he was still sitting there with gabe transmitting memories to give them warmth or to keep them alive because he could be hallucinating from not eating or sleeping so in the end they both could be dead from all the coldness. or when he was walking and referring to seeing the lights, and hearing the music, and saying that he could feel them getting close he meant he could feel it not see it and he was like i said hallucinating from walking so much. i also think that they both could have died from freezing to death because they were hungry exhausted and cold and when jonas died he was replaying all the memories the giver had given him from the very first one.

I think that Jonas and Gabriel die because in the story, Jonas has a flashback where all of a sudden that you start remembering memories of the past and then you start to feel like this pain but it throbs your leg and you feel that it is hot and warm so maybe that’s why Jonas felt that numbing sensation that he thought was his strength. In the Giver, Jonas hears music where he thinks its music and so when he hears it, it’s gone so that makes me think that he died with that music in his mind and so maybe that’s why he thought it was real. I also think that he is dead because it says that he sits on a sled which is weird because it is randomly there waiting for him so it must mean that maybe he was reliving his first memory and it’s funny how he describes the feeling exactly the same as the first memory and what he is now having the same experience when going down the actual hill. There could be another theory that when he had given the memories of warmth and cold, then he must have hallucinated and that his own memories and the memory of going down the hill stood out to him the most so maybe where he was led by his hallucination could have killed him. My theory was that he died because that his mind was hallucinating and that he was blinded and so was his path so that must have lead him to his fate: death.

In my opinion, at the end of The Giver Jonas and Gabriel just fainted and before he closed his eyes he had memories that were getting recalled. The reason why I strongly believe that Jonas was just remembering his past is because before Jonas closed his eyes, Jonas noticed the houses in the other community he reached to. When he went on the sled with Gabriel he perceived the memories he experienced during the training with the giver. That moment just returned the memories he had. Another moment they had before they fainted was when he saw the houses filled with people singing, laughing, enjoying. I am assuming that Jonas just had a theory and the voices simply echoed in his mind due to the state he was in. The reason why they passed out is probably because of their weakness. They didn't get a good source of good and warmth and were very tired of travelling form one community to another. In conclusion, Jonas and Gabriel just passed out and the people on the other community will probably take care of them and give them the warmth the other community didn't.

At the end of the giver its kind of annoying because it doesn't tell you if Jonas and Gabe died or reached elsewhere in my opinion I think that they reach elsewhere and I think it could be another community outside of the old community that Jonas ran away from with Gabe.
I think when they were arrived at the top of the hill Jonas remembered where the sled would be from the first memory that the giver gave to Jonas when Jonas was training. I think When Jonas and Gabe were arriving to elsewhere the community was waiting for them to arrive but I don't know how they would know that Jonas and Gabe were arriving if they reach elsewhere at the end of the book Jonas was having a memory of love because he knew the feeling from one of his memories of his grandparents that he received from the giver because Jonas felt happy and he felt love because he had a memory of it.

At the end of the novel I thought about three things that could have happened to him and Gabe. My first guess is that they both died or lost consciousness and the sled, music, and the room with the red and blue lights that twinkled from trees was a hallucination and everything was in his mind because there was a random sled on a hill of snow or his life was flashing between his eyes because a little earlier he started to remember all his friends, family, and memories that were given to him, also Jonas said that below, ahead people were waiting for him and Gabe, it could mean all the people he knew who were released and he was going to die. A while back the Giver also said he was going to be with his daughter when his work was finished meaning he was going to die soon, giving another reason as to why Jonas might have said that people were waiting him. Jonas could have been referring to the Giver because he might have died already because it said it’s been many days since his release. My second guess is that Jonas and Gabe didn’t survive but he got to Elsewhere because Jonas said that he was very close to elsewhere and I think when he saw all the memories that the Giver gave him and all the memories of his family and friends along with the sled and the room with the Christmas trees were the memories were getting flying away from him and Gabe and returning to the community because the Giver this say that even if the Receiver of Memories was lost that the memories wouldn’t and that they would return to the community so Jonas escaped into elsewhere but he didn’t survive it. My third guess is that Jonas survived and he got to elsewhere because Jonas may have just lost consciousness while he was going down the sled. I think that Jonas got to Elsewhere because the also Giver said that the memories would stay with the community and the memories that he had with his family, his friends, and the memories that he received from the Giver were returned to the community and Jonas was just remembering them this last time. I think the sled on the hill and the house with the Christmas trees and the people singing were all real because nobody knows what is in Elsewhere. Elsewhere could have been just the rest of the world who didn’t go into the Elders’ Utopias or communities maybe Elsewhere was just like here, maybe people chose to endure the pain from war and such to receive the good things such as sunshine or sledding and live outside of the community in villages because there was no hint that I saw which hinted what Elsewhere was. Perhaps people got to choose whether to go to the community or not and the singing people were people who didn’t choose to go. When Jonas said people were waiting for him and Gabe it could have meant more people who were in houses a little farther down so maybe if Elsewhere was where the people who chose not to go to the community stayed they might have helped him or took him in Jonas and Gabe would stay with the people.

I think Gabriel and Jonas survive. The first reason I think this is because Jonas doesn't have any memories left to see. The book says that as Jonas gets farther and farther away, Jonas begins to lose the memories that the Giver had given him. Thus, there are no memories of Christmas or any thing like that. Secondly, because Jonas has no memories left to hallucinate, what he sees has to be real. Another thing is that the sled from Jonas's memories was waiting for him. What's to say that all of his memories exist? Maybe the sled was the way of getting into the world of emotions or something. Also, the Giver is too popular a book with too popular characters for the author to give Jonas and Gabriel the boot. Lois Lowry made four books in the Giver quartet, Jonas and Gabriel are bound to come back because they started everything.

The end of the book was so unexpected. I thought that Jonas and Gabe would have made it alive with changing the community back to normal with its colours. Since the story said Jonas fell down the hill that could mean he died or survived there was not much evidence. Although I do think that Jonas and Gabe survived because They made it to Christmas and they probably did survive.

I think Jonas and Gabriel are dead. How can they survive in the cold and no food. Jonas pretty much gave memories of the warmth and food. Maybe their bodies do nut function but the brain is good because the memories maybe feed the brain. If they did not die than maybe they escaped elsewhere out of the community to another community or they found a non occupied land that they lived in and they had all the warmth and food like vegetables or fruit. I have a thing too wonder? What does Jonas' parents feel like are they happy, sad, or they don't even care anymore about them. Because he thought Jonas just took time with Gabriel. Jonas did a good thing by trying too not let Gabriel get released instead let him die naturally.

I'm thinking that at the end of the novel they finally reach elsewhere and they die when they do because it in the book it says, "Jonas's memories fade as he gets closer" meaning he's closer to elsewhere. It also says that he uses all of his energy to reach the top of the hill and he gets a flashback of good memories in the community I think this means he's dead. It also explains while they were climbing the hill Gabriel was going to die, but Jonas saved him by using his last bit of the memory of warmth. When they reach the top of the hill he doesn't have the memory of warmth, food, or shelter and all of his memories are fading. He loses all of his memories so how is he supposed to remember what a sled is? And they're in the future where everyone is living in these communities and if no one else has ever made it elsewhere then how are there people celebrating Christmas elsewhere?

I think that at the end of the book Jonas and Gabe are still alive it's just that Jonas is dreaming or having a memory because in the book he has a flashback of memories that the giver has told him. Or my second opinion was that they both died because when you die you get a 7 min flashback or 7 min of memories and thats what jonas got. My third opinion was that jonas died but Gabe was still alive because jonas gets a 7 min flashback of his memories but they really didn't tell you about Gabe so I think Gabe is still alive but jonas is dead. But if I had to choose between all three of those choices I would have to choose choice # 3 because at the end of the book they describe jonas more than they describe Gabe so I think Gabe is still alive but jonas is dead. But I could be wrong maybe there both dead or there both alive I don't know but my opinion is that Gabe is still alive and jonas is dead.

I think what happens to Jonas and Gabriel at the end of the novel is that they ended up dead. The reason why I think this is because no one is able to survive outside hungry, exhausted and freezing cold. So my guesses is that Jonas and Gabe end up dying from being hungry, exhausted and coldness. I also believe that Jonas and Gabriel end up in another community elsewhere. The reason why I think this too is because when Jonas and Gabriel found the sled that was waiting for them and settled on it. As they went down the hill Jonas knew that this time there would be no ice, no fall, no pain. Inside his freezing body, his heart surged with hope. This means there is still hope. Also it said the runners sliced through the snow and the wind whipped at his face as they sped in a straight line through an incision that seemed to lead to the final destination, the place that he had always felt was waiting, the Elsewhere that held their future and their past. This means that this place might be the Elsewhere they've been looking for. Also when Jonas and Gabriel escaped the community and tried to go elsewhere because the community wanted to release Gabriel they probably meant to be in another community which was the one they found with lights, colors and families celebrating love. In conclusion, when this happens I think Jonas and Gabriel both faint from starving, weakness and coldness and the new community that they are in helps and takes care of them. These were my reasons of what I think happens to Jonas and Gabriel at the end of the novel.

At the end of the novel, two things could've happened- 1. Jonas and gabe died. 2. Jonas and gabe really did go down a hill and hear music along with seeing christmas. It could've been either one because the book gives evidence supporting both theories. They could've died and Jonas just was remembering the memory of Christmas. After death, the brain plays back 7 minutes of memories, so Jonas could've been playing back his memories and was remembering christmas. Also, the last sentence of the book was "But perhaps it was only an echo". That sentence signifies that maybe it wasn't really music, it was just an echo, music playing in his brain not in real life. However, it also doesn't make sense for a sled to be waiting there for him, on a hill ready to go. However, it also could've been real, Jonas and gabe really did hear music and did find people, houses, and experience christmas. That is what the book explained and also the novel says that Jonas would drop his memories as he goes so he couldn't have any memories to play back. Jonas could've really experienced It just like the book exclaimed, or he could've died from starvation, frost bite, etc. The end of the book was really confusing and surprising as I thought Jonas and gabe wouldn't run away, they would stay in the community and execute a different plan. It was like a twist ending and was so unexpected. Finally, I think that Jonas and gabe died in the end. Jonas could've died and his 7 minutes of memory playback was playing after he died. He could've remembered the memory of Christmas and the sled and heard music from what the giver described. Though the book said as he goes on his journey, he would lose his memories, he didn't forget the memory of the sled and christmas. He and gabe were also cold and extremely hungry, which they could've died from that. The last sentence of the book says " but perhaps it was only an echo", that indicates that maybe it was an echo in his head, meaning remembering that memory in his head. Now that Jonas has lost his memories, the perfect little community will have to deal with it.

There is no real explanation of what happened at the end of the book. I believe that the boys survived because what happens is; The Giver begins to prepare his plan to set in motion the events that will ultimately lead to the end of this society, and his own death. When asked about the nature of his sight, He would change the subject or deflect the question. I think he had special vision in which he could see into the future, and the memories he gave to Jonas were based on what he knew would happen. The battle scene to prepare home for his escape with Gabriel, learning to ride the sled, the injury to his leg, how to alter the temperature in preparation for the cold he would face, and the searchers he would need to avoid. The Giver probably knew well in advance every detail of what would come to pass right down to the moment that Jonas’ last memory would leave him defenseless against the hurdles of his escape to Elsewhere. Jonas says that maybe if he had had time to receive more memories of warmth from the Giver before he escaped there would maybe be more left of him. This indicates that he is broken down and the memories and the powers associated with them are all gone. And so I think what happens next, is that The Giver sends Jonas one of his memories. The memory of the sled to get them quickly downs the mountain to the memory of the Christmas gathering where they will find warmth, rest and sustenance. If this is what is happening, then we don’t have to decide if they have found Elsewhere in the final scene. It’s enough to know that The Giver is with aware of Jonas plight and is able to lend assistance should he require it. The music from behind suggests this possibility. The sled is between the music and the scene below. It represents a memory shared by both Jonas and the Giver, and the scene below is from the memory of the Giver. The boys are safe in the middle. As well, in the next novel called, Messenger, Jonas is in charge of the village and has the gift of future sight. He is wise and helps Matty with advice. This indicates that Jonas and Gabriel are alive as Jonas is now the leader of the village. Another reason why I think that they might be alive is because we believe that it is a very isolated place and so we think it is located in a dome. I think that Jonas and Gabriel went back to the community in a loop and that the community had changed. I have a few reasons which include; how did the sled get there? I think the Giver put it there for Jonas. There's a climate control. They probably use a dome. In that case they won’t be able to get out. That’s why I believe that they could have survived. As well, it says that he heard people singing. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo. And I believe he is alive because it says behind him..., and this indicates that he has reached Elsewhere and he thinks that he is hearing music from where he left which might mean his community but perhaps it was only an echo. This tells us that he has reached his final destination with Gabriel and thinks that he heard joyful music across vast distances from his own community. And that doesn’t have to be an echo maybe the community is actually filled with happiness because last time there was chaos when the receiver was released and we know that Jonas had also received memories of chaos but also happiness so it can very much be Jonas’s community. There is also mention of people waiting for him and for the baby too. Well, if you think about it from a religious prospective. They end up “Elsewhere” on Christmas Day. Jonas has a baby that everyone was waiting for so if you’re Catholic/Christian you can use the perspective that Gabriel is baby Jesus, the baby that everyone was waiting for. And in a way I guess Jonas is Joseph showing him off for all people to see. But without the mention of him in the Messenger, we’d reach a different conclusion. We can say that Jonas and Gabriel are not alive because there is a slight mention of him sliding done the hill and baring to keep his eyes open he could see lights shining through the windows of the rooms and there were red, yellow, and blue lights twinkling from the trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love. I’d like to recall that Jonas had been given this memory by the Giver. This can very much indicate that Jonas wasn’t alive because he was seeing well lights and that all these memories like the memory of the sled and Christmas were running through Jonas’s mind. I think he died because of the lights that he was seeing like the light at the end of the tunnel and the joy and happiness like heaven and Gabe didn't talk at all in the last part of the book. But I’d like to mention that some believe that when somebody dies there is what you call a short

period of time where you review all your memories as Jonas had reviewed the memories of Christmas and his sled experience. But I on the other hand, the chemical and electrical processes that happen when a person is dying may leave a lasting impression in the brain. This can affect the memory and it may even (although the chance is impossibly small) create a working memory. But the chances are unlikely. Taking everything mentioned in the book I feel like the ending is more final than Jonas merely finding a better place. I feel that since the world from which Jonas came was so controlled and unforgiving that the only escape possible seemed like it was death. It seemed to me that Jonas and Gabriel would only find escape, and perhaps a better place, in death. I have always felt that they did die at the end of the book. In order to feel like the book was complete, for me to get a sense of closure, I needed to imagine an ending that made sense to me. Reunited with memories of light, snow, and sleds that the Giver gave him, reunited with memories of music, peace, joy, and freedom of choice that he found within himself, Jonas, along with Gabriel and the community that he left behind, has finally arrived in a better, more wholesome, place. To add to this I’d like to mention that there was talk of music and lights. And may this be indeed true or false I’d like to mention that I had read online of an experience were someone lost their dad and his/her said he was seeing light. This is exactly what it said; Just a minute or two before my dad died, my mom asked him what he was seeing. He said a light. He was drawn to it but did not want to leave my mom. He hung on until my mom told him it was OK to walk into the light. He said he could see my grandmother waiting for him. So, I think people do see a light. I think that light is Jesus. I do not have proof, but this is what I believe based on my experience with my dad passing on. But keep in mind that we cannot contact people after death. Although we can keep asking it is the mind that makes these beliefs so we have some sort of answer to what happens during death. So there is really not any way of knowing so it remains uncertain. In conclusion, I’d like to say that I believe that Jonas and Gabriel could have died but yet they could have survived. The question still remains. “What actually happened to Jonas and Gabriel at the end of the book?”

I think what happened to Jonas and Gabe in the ending of the book was that when Jonas felt himself losing consciousness, him and Gabe probably died. I think they did get to "elsewhere", but they died at that time.In the book Jonas saw lights on trees and families together making memories. It was probably christmas there at "elsewhere". I'm sure that Jonas wasn't dreaming, I think that he died right when Gabe and him got to elsewhere. Whatever happens to Jonas is going to happen to Gabe because they are together and Jonas is holding on to him. So that means they died together. In the book when they were going downward, downward, faster, and faster on the sled I felt like they are getting closer to death and another word for that is "elsewhere". I think when they were getting closer to elsewhere, they were near the community ("elsewhere") because they heard music and people singing for Christmas. So basically I think they both died in the ending of the book. I don't really think they would have survived that big journey. But, they still made it to "elsewhere", that was basically jonas and Gabe's goal.

I think that in the end of the novel Jonas and Gabe are still alive and have made it to "elswhere". They have probably found a village that goes against the community and lives normally with colour, music, and actual emotions. This village probably took care of their injuries, fed them and some family most likely took them in and raised them. The first reason I think that they didn't die is because Jonas didn't have a memory of what music sounded like. He told the giver to keep the memories of music to himself so that he had something to to keep him happy but he heard it when he was on the hill. Also the red sled of his memories was at the top of the hill. So maybe the giver gave him that memory on purpose since he thought from the start that Jonas was going to try to find "elsewhere" and that was his best hope. Another thing I noticed was that in the book he was slowly losing the memories that the giver gave him. Which could possibly mean the lights and music he heard on the hill was real and that he wasn't having a christmas flashback.

I think what happened at the end of the book to Jonas and Gabe was, that they both died or they got to Elsewhere. I think they died by the cold and starvation. They were numb and their hearts surging with hope for life. I think while they were both walking in the snow and they saw the wind covering their eyes. I believe that they were actually losing their sense of sight because they started to lose consciousness, almost to the point of dying. They felt that the snow was soft and powdery. I believe that it is the feeling of them losing his strength and starting to lose their sense of touch. I think that they died on the ride to “Elsewhere” and that they both never opened their eyes, they stayed close instead. When Jonas saw the image of love, I think that he was just hallucinating. He just went back to his favourite memory and those were his last moments alive on earth. The bright lights they saw were also an indication of death because people say that when you die you see a bright white light. When Jonas said they were waiting for him I think that it meant that the afterlife was waiting for him.
I also think that Jonas and Gabe got to Elsewhere and that everything they saw was true. I also think this because they were surging their last hope for life. They might have passed out after what happened and someone might have brought them for help. They probably didn’t hold that much energy before passing out and someone finding them. They probably later on stayed alive and got to Elsewhere.
I think that the story could have gone both ways and there is an even amount of evidence that it could have ended both ways. But for now, I think that Jonas and Gabe are still alive because it would be a matter of time even if they “passed out” that someone might find them and help them.

I think Jonas and Gabe reached there destination which I think is a village or a different community. I think they reached a village that had Christmas happened because that would explain the red, blue and yellow lights on the trees. I think before that, that they were stuck in a snow storm. I think this because there was a lot of snow described in those few last chapters. I think there were people outside going door to door singing Christmas carols because in the book it said that people were singing. They also talk about how family keep these memoirs and how celebrated love. There destination seems like a community but it might not be. For all we know, both of them could be dead and maybe that was what they saw just before they died. They also said at the ending that perhaps it was an echo. Maybe they meant that by saying maybe that it was a dream and maybe what if the Giver was calling Jonas to wake him up from this dream or deep sleep he was in. What if Jonas and Gabe didn’t wake up? What if they died before they could reach there destination?
